Frederick Douglas

Frederick Douglas born Frederick Baily (1817-1895) lived the life of a slave until he ran away to freedom at the age of 21. Described as being eloquent and intelligent, many observers found it hard to believe that he had ever been a slave. Once he found freedom, however, he never stopped fighting for abolition. He was appointed to the position of U.S. Marshal for Washington, D.C. Best known for his personal achievements in government service, he was also involved in newspapers, writing books, public speaking, and diplomacy.
